2017 Tactic

Buenos Dias! It's a beautiful morning in Guatemala as I sit in the courtyard of our guest house and watch the sun rise over the mountain. We will be working in the clinic all day. Not only does it bring me joy to meet the patients and serve them, but we also pray over each patient that comes into our clinic. Yesterday, we went to the hospital in Guatemala and my heart was broken. We have more medication in our small clinic than in the entire hospital. The doctors do not have the resources required to treat the patients, and the conditions were poor. Some families told us they had been waiting for months to be treated. We went to the children's ward to hand out stuffed animals and pray for the sick children. I was able to give away one of Lauren's old Webkinz to a small two year old who was malnourished. Greetings from Tactic! Yesterday was a busy day at the clinic. The team is incredible, the team is working as a well oiled machine. Praise the Lord that nobody has gotten sick and we all have had a great time enjoying all the food prepared for our team by Claudia and Evelin, two precious sisters in Christ working in the ministry of hospitality of Impact Ministries. Yesterday, our day started with a visit to the Church of XiChim. This is a catholic church built in the top of a hill from where the view of the town of tactic is breath-taking. Here, Les Peters explained the meaning of such name and how syncretism is still a problem among the Mayan community to see the truth about Jesus Christ as the only way to be forgiven and have new life. Our team also had the opportunity yesterday to go and visit the hospital of Coban. This is a public hospital providing maternity and pediatric services. This is always a difficult time for many. Heyy, we're alive! And very much off the grid. I won't repeat too much of what Kayla said since she explained what we have been up to the last few days but I did want to mention that this morning we had the opportunity to go to two of the schools that Impact Ministries runs in the Tactic area. At the first school we participated in morning devotions with the elementary school kids, who were very loud and enthusiastic about praising the Lord in song!! Then we went to another school where we got to meet one class of 10 students and their teacher. We played some games with them and shared chocolate-covered fruit as snacks. It was a blast to play with these kids and see their excitement about our visit. I love how excited they are to come up and give us hugs, smile at us, ask us questions even when we can't understand them, giggle with us, and take our hands and make up games to play. Hey Mom! I am alive! So far, our trip to Guatemala has been incredibly beautiful and humbling. After a long night spent sleeping in the airport, I have become a professional at sleeping on planes and bumpy car rides (there are no speed limits).  I am so blessed that the people of Tactic have welcomed us so warmly into their community. It is still early in our trip, but we have had two days of work in the clinic. We have also done several home visits, school visits, and church visits. Our team went shopping in the local market. We also went hiking in a sink hole, and my clumsy self managed not to fall. Also, Dad would be proud that our interpreters are helping me with my Spanish. My Spanglish is muy bien! I am excited for the adventures to come. I am thankful for God's provision. With all my love, Kayla.

What a nice day to travel, the team arrived on time at the church we load all the suitcases in the vans and after praying for safety and wisdom we were sent off. The drive to Newark airport was really nice without any incidents. We didn't get stuck in traffic and we arrived to the airport with plenty of time to spare before boarding our plane. For those of you who have been in any mission trip, you probably hear someone saying " if you want to go on a mission trip you must learn to be flexible" Well, today God make us remember that He is always in control and that indeed we need to be flexible. The event of today make me also remember the words written in Philippians 4:6-7 The Lord is at hand;  do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. One of the first Spanish words you learn on a missions trip is "flexibilidad" (flexibility)... this trip is no exception! Due to weather conditions and the fact that the Guatemala City airport closes at 11pm, our plane isn't able to leave tonight. We will see what the plan is once we get off the plane (been waiting patiently since about 6:15 to take off). Always an adventure!

Eduardo and I have all the items ready for the ministry and this weekend will be spending most of our time packing this is exciting! Lorrie and Kathy are stopping by later to lend us two more bags to pack all the material donated to the ministry by friends and supporters.
